We love spending time with our significant others, but going on dates often costs money. When money is tight, it can seem more difficult to spend quality time with your significant other. However, this isn’t the case. There are plenty of activities for couples that are free or very inexpensive. After all, it shouldn’t be all about the money. If you’re with someone for the right reasons, spending time with your significant other should make you happy, regardless of what you’re doing. Quality time is key.
“My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.”
– Steve Jobs
In this list, I compiled 25 date ideas for couples who want to save:
Check your local listings for free events.
There are free events happening in almost every area, especially on weekends. Google free events in your area or check on specific event websites if you want to find some free fun.
Visit a farmer’s market.
Farmer’s markets can be fun to browse, even if you don’t buy anything. The variety of merchants will surely keep you interested as you look.
Have a picnic in the park.
When you don’t want to pay to go out to eat, a picnic in the park can be just as fun and romantic. A beautiful outdoor atmosphere will set the scene for your date.
If you live in a coastal area, drive to the beach.
Going to the beach is always a treat. Most beaches also have surrounding shops or attractions to see. You can collect shells and enjoy the gorgeous view of the water. If you go on a beach date, you won’t be bored.
Go to the public pool.
If you don’t live near a beach, visiting a public pool can be just as fun.
Go window shopping.
Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, window shopping is a great way to see what’s new in your favorite stores. (If you’re like me, “window shopping” means you’ll probably end up leaving with something though!)
Volunteering together can be a wonderful bonding experience. You and your date will get to know each other better while serving a great cause. It’s a win-win!
Attend a local live music show.
Especially on weekends, many venues host free or inexpensive live music shows, usually featuring local artists. Discover the talent in your town and have a great time by going on a live music date!
Go for a hike.
Enjoy nature with your date by going on a romantic hike.
Take up a new hobby together.
Another great way to bond is to find a hobby that you both will enjoy and pursue it together. The hobby could be outdoorsy, artistic, cooking-related, or anything else you can think of. The important thing is that you both enjoy it and can bond over it.
Visit a museum.
Many museums have free or inexpensive admissions. You can visit art museums, history museums, science museums, and many more!
Kayaking is fun and requires teamwork, which makes it a great date option! Most kayaks are available for rent at reasonable rates.
Watch the sunset.
Sitting outside and watching the sunset together is free, but it can be very romantic.
Cook dinner together. Try a new recipe!
Cooking is another activity you and your date can bond over. If you don’t want to pay to go to a restaurant, bring the restaurant to your home! Find a recipe you both like and give it a try. The only costs here are the ingredients for the meal and the utensils you need to cook it.
Rent a movie to watch and enjoy snacks (popcorn, candy, etc.)
Sometimes, staying in and renting a movie is even more fun than going to a movie theater. You get unlimited snacks, you can pause for bathroom breaks, and there aren’t any annoying people talking through the movie. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the movie with your date.
Train for a 5k together (or a marathon, if you’re feeling ambitious).
Get healthy together by training for a 5k. You will feel so accomplished once you complete the race!
Visit a wildlife sanctuary.
Wildlife sanctuaries are humane, and their admission fees are often much less expensive than zoos. Some sanctuaries will even let you feed and pet the animals!
Watch a Netflix series together.
Have multiple Netflix date nights, or binge an entire series all in one day. No judgment here!
Even if you’re not an outdoorsy person, camping for a night with your significant other can be a lot of fun. You’ll spend time together away from the hustle and bustle of your normal lives. Camping is a great way to bond and spend quality time together.
Stargazing is completely free, but it can be very romantic. If you live in an urban area, you might have to drive a little ways out of the city to get a clear view of the stars. Once you really see them, you might be amazed!
Play a video game you both enjoy.
I personally believe there is a video game for everyone. Whether it’s Mario Kart or League of Legends, you and your date could find a video game you both like and enjoy some friendly competition.
Take a class together.
You could take a dance class, a cooking class, a foreign language class, a yoga class… anything you want! Cost will vary depending on which type of class you choose to take, but learning something new together would be an excellent bonding experience.
Get ice cream. (Or make it yourself at home!)
Ice cream is inexpensive, but it still makes people smile. Visit your favorite ice cream joint or figure out how to make it yourself at home.
Visit a pool hall and play a few games with your date. If you don’t know how to play, your date could possibly even teach you!
Bowling is a classic favorite because it doesn’t matter how bad you are. You could be the worst bowler ever and still have a grand time with your date.
