The New Year is the perfect time to reassess who you are and where you’d like to be. For me, I have started to think about my own success in life and how much more I’d like to do in blogging, school, and my public relations profession.

Let’s face it— being successful is not easy (unless you win the powerball). Successful people have certain mindsets that drive them to chase their dreams and accomplish all their goals. It’s the change in perspective and tireless motivation that make for a success story.

I recently discovered a wonderful book called THE WOO OF POO: Change Your Life in the Time You Take A Sh*tIt is a hilarious and entertaining self-help book by Suzy Batiz, the CEO and creator of Poo~Pourri, the Before-You-Go® Toilet Spray. In her book, Batiz and tells the story of how she built her product into a multi-million dollar empire.

The book has a signature product, the WOO of POO Before-You-Go® Toilet Spray. It is limited edition, and it was created in celebration of Poo~Pourri’s 10-year anniversary. The scent is a blend of ginger, neroli, and magic.

THE WOO OF POO is a lighthearted and fun book with some seriously great advice in it. In this post, I’m sharing 10 lessons that I drew from the book (including the chapters I found them in) and why I think each piece of advice is so great. If you turn each of these lessons into personal mantras, you will achieve so much more than you could ever imagine.

Here are 10 mantras for success and happiness:

1. Open your mind.

From “Relax and Unclench,” pg. 17-18

You’d be surprised at what you discover when you open your mind to all possibilities. Don’t limit yourself to the norm. Your best ideas will come to you when you keep your mind open.

2. Stay true to yourself.

From “Let it Flow,” pg. 27

Authenticity is key! Don’t try to be someone else, and definitely don’t try to live someone else’s life. People find success when they stay true to themselves and fulfill their own destinies instead of trying to follow someone else’s.

3. Instead of dwelling on the bad, focus on the good.

From “The Universe Has Your Backside,” pg. 37

A negative mind will never lead to a positive life. Life isn’t perfect, and sometimes bad things do happen. However, if we leave the bad in the past and focus on all the great things that happen to us, we will be much happier and more successful.

4. Live with intention.

From “Doo It on Purpose,” pg. 50

The purpose of life is to live with purpose. This is why goal-setting is so important. We must live with intention if we want to succeed in our careers or find true happiness in life.

5. Don’t be afraid to speak up and challenge the norms.

From “Go There,” pg. 66

Nothing great happens by sticking with the status quo. Major breakthroughs and successes often require going against the status quo or challenging the norms in society.

6. Chase your dreams.

From “Bare Your Genius,” pg. 75

People waste their lives every day by choosing to ignore their passions. You could live a mediocre life doing something you don’t enjoy, or you could chase your passions and live the life you always dreamed of. You’ll never achieve anything unless you try!

7. Trust your gut.

From “Trust Your Gut,” pg. 89

People often don’t give their own intuition enough credit.  If you have a gut feeling about something, trust it! Your gut feeling might just lead you to a multi-million dollar idea.

8. Care for your body.

From “Keep Crap Out of Your Mouth,” pg. 108

Your body needs nutrients in order function properly. By eating healthy and caring for your body, you increase your potential for success. You’ll feel a lot better, too!

9. Take responsibility for yourself.

From “Own Your Shit,” pg. 123

It’s easy to attribute things to others, but it isn’t productive. When you learn to take responsibility for your work and actions, you will find more motivation to grow and succeed. You’re awesome, so own it!

10. Think outside the box.

From “Do Epic Shit,” pg. 138

Great ideas don’t come from inside the box. Ideas outside the box might seem zany, unfeasible, or just plain crazy, but a few of them might be great! Learn to think outside the box, and you will be well on your way to a life of success.
